Gabo, nearing 80 now, still busts his hump. No doubt the work will be clucked at severely by reviewers of a tender age and gender--although perhaps not so severely as they peck at Messrs. But any actual sin would be committed only if they failed to see that Memories is an elegant, sturdy meditation on regret, isolation, decay, and the inevitable perversity of redemption. As he says in the first volume of his memoirs, Living to Tell the Tale , he spent much of his youth carousing in brothels, though the prostitutes in his fiction are rarely the prostitutes of real life. They tend to be either ingenues martyred to sex, or big-bottomed figures who are never fooled by a man yet will happily furnish him with energetic sex and boundless love.
The year-old in his latest novella falls into the first camp. Memories of My Melancholy Whores begins with the wonderful line: "The year I turned 90, I wanted to give myself the gift of a night of wild love with an adolescent virgin. His greatest novel, One Hundred Years of Solitude , begins: "Many years later, as he faced the firing squad, Colonel Aureliano Buenda was to remember that distant afternoon when his father took him to discover ice. This suddenly randy old man is a sourer, older, less successful version of the author.
He's a newspaper columnist, with no family, who's never slept with a woman he didn't pay. He leads a cramped life until this momentous night when he goes to a brothel and finds that his virgin was so nervous about her anticipated deflowering, she's been given bromide and valerian and is fast asleep.
